Leading global sustainability rating agencies such as EcoVadis, MSCI Inc. and Morningstar Sustainalytics now operate under strict supervision by European regulatory authorities.<\/p>\n<p>This decision brings full transparency and integrity to an area that operated for years without clear rules.<\/p>\n<p>What changes in practice?<\/p>\n<p>The European Union has adopted a new regulation with a clear objective: to combat misleading green marketing (<em>greenwashing<\/em>) through full standardisation and oversight of the ESG evaluation process.<\/p>\n<p>The changes shift the focus directly to the credibility of the rating itself through three key changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strict conflict-of-interest rules: Agencies may no longer simultaneously conduct a company's ESG evaluation and charge that same company for consulting services aimed at improving the rating.<\/li>\n<li>Clear separation of roles: The Regulation draws a firm line between the party carrying out the independent evaluation (the rater) and the party helping the company improve its performance (the adviser).<\/li>\n<li>Methodology transparency: The evaluation process ceases to be a 'black box'. Agencies are now required to publicly and precisely disclose the weighting, data and parameters on which their ratings are based.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This regulation brings far more than administrative oversight - it fundamentally changes the architecture of sustainable business. By separating the rating function from advisory services, ESG evaluation finally gains institutional credibility.
